This national park is also known as 'Rajiv Gandhi National Park,' is located 94 km from Mysore. It is spread between Kodagu and Mysore districts. Located to the northwest of Bandipur National Park, Kabini reservoir separates the two.
Nagarhole (pronounced ‘narga holy’) derives its name from the root word `Naga' from Kannada language, which means `snake' and `Hole' that means `streams'. It was the exclusive hunting reserve of the former rulers of Mysore. The park has dense forest cover, small streams, valleys, and waterfalls.
Wildlife found in Nagerhole National Park include elephant, jackal ,tiger, panther, gaur, muntjac, sambar, spotted deer and mongoose. Game viewing can be done either by boat from the river Kabini or by jeep within the depths of the national park and it is considered one of the best parks in southern India for game viewing.
