Tuk Tukking in Delhi

Posted By Karen | 31st May 2010

Delhi Rush Hour........It’s more like Rush Day, Rush Week, Rush Month, Rush Year......It never stops, continuous traffic. Getting a normal taxi in Delhi can be frustrating at most times, especially if you are strapped for time, or like me lost track of time while sightseeing and needed to get back to my hotel before I flew out of Delhi that night.

Note to self.....and to anyone reading this..... Always have a piece of paper with your hotel name, address and phone number – eg. Business card! All I had on me was the hotel name, not the address or contact phone number and when I tried to get a taxi no one knew where my hotel was. I then approached a Tuk Tuk Driver who spoke pretty good English and he told me that he knew my hotel. The other good thing was that I managed to negotiate a fairly good deal as well as they don’t run on meters. Once we took off I had to hold on for life (no seatbelts) but I found it amazing how the driver managed to manoeuvre his way through traffic, sometimes missing other vehicles by inches, but this man sure knew how to drive. It felt like a thrilling rollercoaster ride.

The Driver did get lost along the way, but stopped at another hotel, asked for directions and got me to my hotel in record time enough for me to have a shower, get dressed and pick up my airport transfer. So, if you are in Delhi and need to get anywhere in a hurry, my advice is to grab a Tuk Tuk.
